Dengue Fever Symptoms

By jasica thomas at 2010-11-12 01:39:33
Dengue fever is an infectious disease carried by mosquitoes and caused by any of four related dengue viruses. This disease used to be called "break-bone fever" because it sometimes causes severe joint and muscle pain that feels like bones are breaking.

Most of the time, dengue fever isn't fatal. It's treated like a regular fever. Rest, drink lots of fluids and eat healthy food. Most of the time this works, however patients should be monitored carefully. If dengue progresses and the worst symptoms start to occur then they should be sent to the hospital as soon as possible. Even if the fever goes down after 3 to 5 days, keep monitoring.

The rapid, clinical response of dengue fever to aggressive treatment, including fluids and electrolytes, even in very serious patients, is among the most dramatic events in clinical medicine. Treated promptly, children in shock and coma can wake up and return to near normalcy within hours. The Ayurvedic treatment of dengue fever is aimed at treating the symptoms and preventing complications.

Dengue has some very specific symptoms:

1- A "saddleback" rash. It begins on the torso and spreads to the arms, legs, and face three to four days after the beginning of fever.
2-Joint pain so severe the condition has earned the name "break bone fever," although it does not actually break bones.
3-Severe headache, nausea, vomiting, sudden, high fever.
4- And in small number of cases, hemorrhagic shock, a medical emergency.

Infectious disease specialists have been expecting dengue fever in the southern U.S. Two mosquitoes common to the southeastern U.S. are known carriers of the virus. Dengue cases in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean quadrupled between 1989 and 2007. A single infected traveler returning from the Caribbean, South America or Asia could trigger an outbreak.

If you are having muscular pains, rashes, extreme headaches, and recurring fever, then you may suspect dengue. The bright red petechia rash would be first noticed on the lower limbs and followed on the chest. In sever cases, rashes appear all over the body of the victim.

Leave the hot pack in place for ten or fifteen minutes, or until it is cool. Then rub the area with a small piece of ice or a cold cloth and dry the skin with a rough Turkish towel. The pack, or formention, may be reapplied several times, as desired. Follow this with some massage or heavy rubbing.

Prevention and Control:

Cover water drums and water pails at all times to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Replace water in flower vases once a week. Clean all water containers once a week. Scrub the sides well to remove eggs of mosquitoes sticking to the sides. Clean gutters of leaves and debris so that rain water will not collect as breeding places of mosquitoes.

Dengue outbreak usually occurs in urban areas and there is minimal cases recorded in rural places. Each virus strands is transmitted to humans by the Aedes Aegypti or more commonly known as Aedes Albopictus mosquito. These mosquito carriers only feeds in daytime and mostly low flying types of mosquitos.

Not all mosquitoes transmit the dengue virus. There are over 160 different species but only two cause trouble: the Aedes albopictus and more commonly, the Aedes aegypti. Only female mosquitoes bite and they're active two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.

The normal range of temperature can be anywhere from 95 or 96 degrees to 98 degrees F. Normally, the body temperature is lowest in the early morning and keeps rising slowly. It peaks at 2 am in the night, and then starts to fall. Hence, if you were to measure your child's temperature in the morning, it might show 96 or 96.5 degrees. In the evening, it might show 98. This is the normal pattern.

When body temperature rises above the normal range (98ยบ.4F) it is considered a fever. There are multiple causes and each type of fever has been named on the basis of the causes which trigger it. There can be no fever in the absence of any cause, as a fever is simply an effect of a cause or set of causes.
