Symptoms of Schizophrenia

By jasica thomas at 2010-11-18 01:35:00
Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disorder that has been recognized throughout recorded history. The first signs of schizophrenia typically emerge in the teenage years or early twenties. It is a form of psychosis, which is an impairment of thinking in which the interpretation of reality is abnormal. It is uncommon in children and is hard to recognize in its early phases.

Schizophrenia, from the Greek roots schizein ("to split") and phren- ("mind"), is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental illness characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality, most commonly manifesting as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions or disorganized speech and thinking in the context of significant social or occupational dysfunction. Onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood.

Prevention and Medication

In order to prevent the frequent occurrence of psychotic episodes, doctors prescribe medicines after few tests. Once the tests confirm the mental disorder as none other than schizophrenia, treatment commences. The medicines so prescribed are quite efficient to a large extent however, if a schizophrenic becomes irregular in dosage, schizophrenia relapses without delay.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a type of psychotic disorder, which means that the person often has a difficult time distinguishing between what is real and what is imagined. A person with schizophrenia often experiences psychotic symptoms in the form of delusions or hallucinations. Delusions are beliefs that are not based in reality, whereas hallucinations consist of imagined perceptual experiences, such as hearing imaginary voices or seeing things that are not real.

Although the exact cause of schizophrenia remains unknown, experts agree that schizophrenia develops as a result of interplay between biological predisposition (for example, inheriting certain genes) and environmental factors. These lines of research are beginning to converge: brain development disruption is likely the result of genetic and/or environmental stressors early in development (during pregnancy or early childhood), leading to subtle alterations in the brain.

Sometimes it is the result of denial by the person affected with the illness, or by the people around them. Other times it is the result of lack of education about the illness and an inability to understand what the symptoms are. It is also possible that a Learning disability can be the direct effect of a bigger underlying mental illness issue that a medical professional has over looked.

Treatment is most effective when it is implemented early on in the development of the disorder. Medications used to treat schizophrenia are called antipsychotics. These medicines do not cure schizophrenia but help relieve the most troubling symptoms, including delusions, hallucinations and thinking problems. Older medications used include: Thorazine, Prolixin, Haldol, Navane, Stelazine, Trilafon and Mellaril.

Several structural and functional changes in the brain can cause Schizophrenia. The frontal lobe, part of the brain that helps human to make decision is malfunction. Researches have long proved that people with Schizophrenia have usually large ventricles, indicating a discrepancy in their neurons.

As it is difficult to diagnose the illness ourselves, it is much advisable to consult experts. Seeking help from a respected psychologist or psychiatrist would be better. They are the ones most eligible in finding natural, traditional, and modern techniques in the course treatment of OCD Schizophrenia.

Disorganized schizophrenia affects the person's abilities to think logically. A normal thought process recognizes the relevance of a particular thought at that moment, focuses on it and moves to the next in sequence. In disorganized schizophrenia the thoughts crowd the brain together and nothing gets sorted out. Catatonic schizophrenia causes a person to be emotionally flat. A normal emotional response of a particular situation will be missing in this person.

Others believe that the cause for schizophrenia is drugs. The drug abuse only gives worse symptoms of schizophrenia or triggers schizophrenia to manifest, but this means that the disease already existed before drugs were taken. In healthy persons drugs only give symptoms like those in schizophrenia but do not create the disease.

To treat children and adolescents with Schizophrenia, group therapy, family therapy and atypical antipsychotic drugs are commonly used. The common practice is for parents to bring their child to a pediatrician and ask him to refer a psychiatrist who is good in diagnosing, assessing and treating children with Schizophrenia. Parents must try their best to encourage the child to participate in different activities in school that help to treat the mental disorder.
