Symptoms Of Triglycerides

By jasica thomas at 2010-11-22 01:33:19
Triglycerides are blood lipids consisting of 3 molecules fatty acid and one glycerin. Triglycerides also constitute 95 percent of all fatty tissue in the body. They are the early stage building blocks of VLDL molecules and most experts now believe that lowering these blood lipids is an essential part of heart health.

Triglycerides are a form of fat. In fact they are the most prevalent form of fat in our bodies. Our bodies make triglycerides and we consume them in our diets. Even though we live in culture where 'thin is in', fat is a good thing. Triglycerides in particular are good because they are the form of fat our bodies use for energy. But like many things more is not necessarily better. Triglycerides truly represent an example of the maxim, 'too much of a good thing'.

Since triglycerides are fats, a diet high in fat is also a bad idea. But when I mention fats I have in mind mostly saturated fats and of course anything that contains trans-fats. Some fats however should be consumed in large amounts in order to reduce triglycerides. These are polyunsaturated fats especially omega-3. Omega-3 (particularly from fish sources) is well documented to dramatically lower triglycerides.

Triglycerides are a type of fatty acid in your body. When you eat more calories than you use, your body converts the excess calories into fat in the form of triglycerides and stores it in fat cells. Some of the triglycerides are always circulating in your blood. Triglycerides provide an energy reserve for your body. Whenever you need extra energy, your body breaks the triglycerides down into energy packets that your cells can use.

Symptoms Of High Triglycerides

You will not be aware that you already have high triglycerides level since it doesn't show any symptoms. But if it is caused by genetic conditions, xanthomas may develop. Xanthomas are the visible fatty deposits under the skin. In some cases , you may develop pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas due to high triglycerides level which can instigate loss of appetite, sudden and severe abdominal pains, fever, nausea and vomiting.

Triglyceride is body fat which when combined with cholesterol forms plasma lipids in the body. High levels of triglyceride in the body equates to high levels of bad cholesterol and low levels of good cholesterol.

Considered normal triglyceride level is less than 150 mg/dL; borderline to high level is from 150 to 199 mg/dL; high level is from 200 to 499 mg/dL; and very high level is 500 mg/dL or higher.

Triglycerides, simply put, are a form of fat that circulates in the blood. People who suffer from a high level of blood cholesterol often have high triglycerides as well. The recommended level of triglycerides is under 200 ml/dl. One would think that in order to lower triglyceride levels it is important to lower fat consumption, since triglycerides are a form of fat. Interestingly enough, that is not accurate.

Fortunately the main way to treat high triglycerides is through dietary and lifestyle changes. First and foremost, it is important to strive for a healthy weight. Talk to your doctor about the diet plan that is best for your individual needs. Any successful diet is based on the idea of burning more calories than you take in from food and beverages.

Natural nutrients including niacin and Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil have been shown to be effective at lowering elevated triglyceride levels. Niacin is a B-vitamin cofactor which is known to positively influence blood lipids, and moderate triglycerides. Omega-3 fats exert a powerful triglyceride lowering effect due to their ability to reduce chronic inflammation as well as improve insulin resistance.

If you think about it, triglycerides are not in themselves bad. The human body even produces triglycerides, so how can they be bad? Triglycerides become bad only when their levels in the system exceed the normal levels. High triglycerides, if coupled with high cholesterol, can be very dangerous. Heart disease, just like coronary artery disease or heart attack, is a big possibility.

It is also vital to have more fish in your diet. Fish is a good source of Omega 3, an essential fatty acid that has earned recognition because of its capability in reducing not just cholesterol levels but triglycerides, too. Taking olive oil and hazelnut oil is also recommended because of their excellent health benefits.
