Vitamin Deficiency - Signs And Symptoms

By jasica thomas at 2010-11-23 00:42:05
Vitamins seem to be so good for everything. The newly born needs them to grow properly; women take them to be happy; men use them to maintain or increase potency; athletes ingest them to stay fit; and older people take them to become younger or to avoid the flu. Even foods are categorized into good and bad, depending on how many or few many vitamins they contain.

Homocysteine is an inflammatory molecule produced in your body after certain metabolic processes occur. Your body's ability to render homocysteine harmless is essential for optimal health. Otherwise, homocysteine builds up in your system and triggers inflammation that thus begins the course of many chronic diseases. The B vitamins (folic acid, B12, B6 and others) are the powerhouse molecules needed to accomplish this task.

Common signs and symptoms associated with Vitamin B-12 deficiency include:

1-Anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, and weight loss

2-Neurological problems such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet

3-Difficulty in maintaining balance

4-Depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory

5-Soreness of the mouth or tongue

Vitamin D, also known as Cholecalciferol is the only vitamin that the human body is capable of producing on its own if it is exposed to sufficient amounts of sunlight. Generally an hour a week is considered enough. All the other vitamins need to be supplied to the body either via a balanced nutritious diet or by consuming vitamin supplements.

Iron is a co-enzyme in the anabolism of catecholamines. That means it is essential for the creation of certain neurotransmitters. It helps to regulate the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which probably accounts for the association of iron deficiency with neurological problems.

It makes sense that supplementing ADHD children, who have some level of iron deficiency, might have some effect on their ADHD. However, what makes sense in theory, does not always work in practice. Unfortunately, there have been very few studies done testing the effects of iron supplementation on ADHD.

The tryptophans are large molecules. Their break down and absorption is not as easy as those of the smaller molecule amino acids. Most amino acids are transported by carbohydrate molecules. For this reason, we need to step-up the carbohydrate intake mildly through complex carb foods. This makes more free transport buses available for the tryptophan molecules and also cuts the competition among other amino acid molecules with the absorption of tryptophan.

Some of the herbs and vitamins that are included in energy drinks include, ginseng, gingko, biloba, echinacea and Vitamin B. In energy drinks, these herbs and vitamins are usually said to have health benefits, which encourages people to drink in excess of what they otherwise should. If consumed in excess with other medications, these herbs and vitamins can be potentially harmful.

What causes seizures? Epilepsy is one cause. Certain dog breeds are more susceptible to epilepsy. These include: cocker spaniels; poodles; collies; german shepherds; irish setters; golden retrievers; dachshunds, labrador retrievers, saint bernards, miniature schnauzers, siberian huskies, and wire-haired terriers. Veterinarians are not sure what causes this "hereditary" epilepsy.

Vitamin D plays a vital role in calcium absorption and it's deficency causes a whole host of problems. About 10 minutes exposure to the sun daily helps the body produce enough amounts. People should get about 400 to 800 units a day. Many foods are rich in vitamin D such as fish, eggs and fortified milk. Women should supplement with one pill of 600 mg of calcium plus vitamin D. Evidence about It's use in Diabetes is definitely inconclusive.

The real facts about Vitamin C may surprise you. First of all what is Vitamin C? Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. Unlike the oil soluble vitamins such as A and E, Vitamin C cannot be stored by your body. Since Vitamin C is not stored by your body, we need to get it from our diet or from supplements.

Most people understand that vitamins are helpful, but they do not know exactly what each vitamin does. Vitamin A is very important for eyesight and also helps you see colors more clearly and distinctly. Finally, vitamin A helps proper growth and healthy skin. B vitamins are very important in metabolic activity.
