Symptoms of West Nile Virus

By jasica thomas at 2010-11-23 00:57:45
West Nile Virus is a disease spread by mosquitoes, the first occurrences of which appeared in the USA in 1999. The virus can be fatal to birds, horses and unfortunately humans too. If you are a parent and are worried about symptoms of West Nile Virus in children then you should be aware that the virus is much less likely to be contracted by children than it is by adults.

Both Central and South America are major hot spots for this virus as they harbour significant numbers of the mosquito population. A complex network of interaction between the virus, the birds, and the mosquitoes exists, and it is still somewhat poorly understood. In order for the West Nile virus vaccine to be created, it is imperative for scientists to fully disentangle and comprehend the inter-connections.

In order to discuss the symptoms of West Nile Virus in children, we should know a little about the 3 different stages of West Nile Virus. The first stage is an asymptomatic infection. This means that no symptoms are felt by the sufferer. This does not mean that it is impossible to tell if someone has contracted West Nile Virus as we should be aware of the difference between signs and symptoms. Doctors can detect the signs of viruses even if the sufferer does not feel symptoms.

In the first stage of West Nile Virus which everyone who suffers the disease will experience, there are no symptoms felt. If the sufferer does not progress to either of the next 2 stages they will not be aware that they have even been infected. Therefore, no West Nile Virus treatment is required to be administered.

Mosquitoes become carriers of the West Nile virus after feeding on the blood of birds infected with the virus. The West Nile virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Recently, scientists have discovered that people can become infected with the West Nile virus through other ways like blood transfusions and organ/tissue transplants.

What causes West Nile Virus: It mainly infects birds, but is also the cause of a number of conditions in humans and horses, and some other mammals. West Nile virus is a virus mainly transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Here are some tips to seriously consider for West Nile Virus prevention. It's best to keep your dog inside early in the morning and evening hours. This will greater reduce the risk of possible exposure and mosquito bites. Also, prevent your dog from getting into close contact with any dead squirrels or birds that may be affected by the West Nile Virus.

Birds carry West Nile virus. It was almost certainly a bird that brought the virus to New York in the summer of 1999, but no one knows for sure exactly how it happened. The bird may have been ill, or it may have been relatively healthy: some birds die from the infection while others are unaffected. In any case the bird was bitten by a mosquito while the virus was circulating in its bloodstream.

Mosquitoes nest there young around and in standing water, if you have ponds or pools keeping them treated with the proper chemicals will keep the nest hunting mosquitoes away, if not in use keep them dry and or covered. Keep screens on windows and doors in good repair or install new screens where needed. Also keep your rain gutters clean so the rains water can flow and not be trapped, keep and thing that can catch water dry.

Prevention of the Virus in Birds

There is no surefire way to obliterate the virus presently, but there are certain ways to reduce the likelihood of its presence in your area. Water in birdbaths should be changed every 48 hours to prevent mosquito eggs from hatching and potentially passing on the disease to birds and humans.

If you have recently been bitten by a mosquito and seem to be suffering any of the aforementioned encephalitis symptoms, you should certainly seek the advice and diagnosis of a doctor. Unfortunately since there is no vaccine or cure for West Nile Virus encephalitis there is not a lot that can be done if you have encephalitis symptoms. Since it is a viral infection, antibiotics are of no help since they can only battle bacterial infections.

The virus spreads mostly through mosquitoes. A mosquito feeds on infected birds and gets the virus itself. When it goes to feed on a human, it can easily pass the infection onto the human. However, in a small number of cases, childbirth, transfusions, and transplants can all transmit the virus, but mosquitoes are the most common way of contracting the West Nile Virus.
