Symptoms of Anterograde Amnesia

By jasica thomas at 2010-11-26 00:39:16
Anterograde amnesia or short term memory loss is a predicament that may crop up either through brain injury or by certain drugs in which the individual is gravely enervated in learning new itemized information. Memories or events that happened preceeding that injury prevails unscathed but the events that occurred after that injury are lost. Anterograde amnesia is devastating to the person and his family. Person's adroitness for judgment and intelligence are not hampered.

This was a traumatic experience for me, as I'm sure it was for him because during this ten year amnesia period, his wife had died and we met each other only three years prior to his accident. When I visited him, there were times that he knew my name and other times when I asked him if he knew who I was that he avoided my question. But even when he seemed to know my name, I don't think he had any real understanding of what our relationship meant to him.

Childhood amnesia, which in several instances is called Infantile amnesia, is probably the most common type of amnesia - the failure to remember events from our childhoods. There is many popular theories as to why we have this loss of memory from our child; most recently it has been thought to be as a result of language development or under-developed parts of the brain.

Amnesia can be caused by either physical trauma or emotional trauma. Brain damage due to physical trauma such as a stroke, bleeding in the brain, long-term alcohol abuse and tumors that develop in parts of the brain that control memory are just some of the causes. If the physical trauma is related to a head injury, then the length of memory loss is often related to the severity of the injury.

symptoms of amnesia:

The primary symptom is memory loss. Some sufferers experience only partial loss of recall, while others are stricken with a complete erasure of memory. Secondary symptoms such as language-related issues, and inability to sense danger result from the patient's lack of memory.

The awake injured person whilst appearing to be awake, is behaving or talking in an uncharacteristic manner. The person has no continuous memory of day to day events, and recent events may be equally affected. They may be unable to remember what happened a few hours ago, or even a few minutes ago. PTA can sometimes occur without the person having been unconscious beforehand.

Anterograde is another of the various types of amnesia out there. It is the inability to form new memories from the point of amnesia forward. Memories from the past can be recalled, but the person cannot create any new memories. The inability to remember things going forward can vary depending on the damage and cause of the amnesia. Usually the person cannot move things from their short term memory into long term memory so they can never recall events as they happen, names or faces of people they just met, etc.

When an individuals has amnesia, they lose their memory for anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of months or more. Why the loss of memory? It could be because of brain injury or some type of psychological experience the individuals went through. There are also different types. You have anterograde, lacunar, korsakoff, retrograde and posthypnotic. When you have this fear, you are afraid of each and every type of amnesia.

Amnesia, which is also known as a temporary loss of memory, can be determined by several factors. It is characterized by one's incapacity to remember certain information. It is more frequent in older people. When it is labeled as temporary, the memory loss lasts between several hours and a few months. In this situation, the condition is named transient amnesia.

Global amnesia is one of the most frequent types of memory loss. It is characterized by inability to recall things that are stored in the long-term memory. However, patients who suffer from amnesia do not present any problems related to the short-term memory. Furthermore, amnesiacs can remember semantic memories.

The typical onset and duration of delirium is usually rapid and duration is brief, typically less than 1 month. Research has found older people (60+ y/o), people with decreased cerebral reserve (e.g., prior CNS injury or impaired cognition), post-cardiotomy patients, and people going through drug withdrawal to be most at-risk for developing delirium. Twenty percent of people over age 85 have dementia.

Repression refers to the inability to recall information due to its emotional significance, rather than true loss of the information. Misinformation effect (false memories) has been found to occur when actual memories are combined with the content of suggestions from other sources of information such as when conversing with others who experienced the same event or accessing new information from the media.

One limitation is that ECT is not a permanent cure. There is always the danger that the patient might become depressed again. While this is true of other psychiatric treatments (short of lobotomy), the relapse rates seem to be higher for ECT, perhaps because ECT is tried only on the most serious cases. One suggested way of handling the problem of relapses would be to give an ECT every few months as a maintenance therapy.
